"STUDENTS IN THE ARCHIVE"
HAGA - GOTHENBURG HISTORY

"STUDENTS IN THE ARCHIVE" is a micro site of E-HELP (European History E-Learning Project). It's based on a course in local history at Hvitfeldtska Gymnasiet, Gothenburg, Sweden 2004-2005. The name of the course was "Gothenburg History HI501".
We used the Regional Archive in Gothenburg, the City Museum and a few other local places to be able to establish who lived in a certain house at a certain time in the old part of Gothenburg called Haga. The idea behind this exercise was to become more familiar with primary sources of the city history and to be able to document the results with digital resources.
At this time we thought we would start a bigger local project that identified the industrialization period on an individual level. The idea was to first cover Haga in this and the following courses and then maybe expand the investigation into other parts of the city of Gothenburg. Unfortunately this did not happen. I have still kept thiese pages to show the possibilities with local archives and digital resources and who knows - maybe we will be able to continue this project one day...
The old suburb of Haga was our first choice since it was close to the school and it was well known for being an overcrowded part

of the city with a pre-dominantly working class structure by the end of the 1800s. It was during this time the city went through the industrialization (from a more old fashioned trading port to a busy industrial city). In Haga a new class was established - the industrial working class. We thought it was well worth while to tell their story...
Our sincere thanks to the Regional Archive of Gothenburg and the City Museum for great service and a lot of patience but most of all thank you students at Hvitfeldtska who helped to start this project - you rule!
