Paper One

As an IB History teacher I focused on prescribed subject 3: The move to global war so this is the subject I will offer. The two case studies focused on:
1. Japanese expansionism from 1931 to 1941
2. German + Italian expansionism from 1933 to 1941.
The paper contains four sources. These sources will be primary or a mixture of primary and secondary, and may be written, pictorial or diagrammatic. The paper will consist of four questions for each prescribed subject, and students must answer all four questions. Some questions will be answered using only evidence from one or more of the sources, as indicated. In other questions students will be asked to use their own knowledge of the prescribed subject as well as evidence contained in the sources. Here is a sample of this paper: Paper One
Paper One gives 30% of the final grade for SL (Standard Level) and 20% of the final grade for HL (Higher Level).

The IB Syllabus points out these specific parts to study: PAPER ONE Syllabus explanation on what to study

TUTOR COMMENT: Tutoring this paper includes learning basic source criticism, the ability to recognize and discuss different kinds of sources and later apply this in writing. This paper has a time limit of 60 minutes so it’s important you focus on the task (what the question asks you to do). In the tutoring session you will be given some samples and learn the differences between the four questions given so you know how to approach each question. The result of this paper is also connected to your factual knowledge (which the Syllabus shows in detail). It’s important that you make sure you have the required knowledge if you aim for a high score and grade.
